Our Journey to Sweden

Our plane left Bozeman at 6:30 a.m. so we had to leave home at 4:30. The dogs, Lizzy and Boone, were already over in Sidney, Montana at a doggie boot camp where they would stay for 6 weeks. I had filled automatic watering devices on all our houseplants. We made the 30-minute trip to the [...]

Barbro and Åke take us to Eksjö

Barbro and Åke Bogelius drove from their home in Hasslösa and arrived about 11:00 a.m. It is always so fun to meet people in person you have gotten to know well by exchanging emails. Barbro seemed to me to be as we expected—sweet and thoughtful, somewhat reserved but bubbling with sincere emotion. Åke was a [...]

May 20, 2012: A day in Vänga, Home of Andrew Swanson

On May 20, 2012, we visited Vänga, Sweden, the birthplace of Anna Charlotta Swanson, Daryl’s great grandmother Hallquist. This is located at the approximate coordinates (57.8577, 12.9269) and is 143 km and 2 hours drive from Rödjenäs, our Swedish abode for the month. Daryl drove and Åke was the navigator, having expertly mapped the locations and figured out how to use the GPS in the rental car. Anne and Barbro sat in the back seat. Barbro gave Anne lessons in Swedish pronunciation.

May 21, 2012: Visit to Skälsarp, Önne Mill and Småöya

Heading to Skälsarp (56.9653, 13.4496), the birthplace of Andrew Ring and most of his siblings, required a 138 km drive from Rödjenäs and over two hours. We traversed winding narrow roads through thick forests, the leaves on the deciduous trees really opening up in the warm, 75-degree sunny day. Their lighter green or deep red was set off by the rich color of the evergreens. Blossoming trees provided accents to the spring pallet. All at once a grouse as big as a chicken walked in front of the car. It was a capercaillie (tetrao urogallus), the largest member of the grouse family. Daryl had never seen one since we don’t have them in North America. He stopped in front of us and let us snap numerous photos.

May 22, 2012: Visit to Länghems and Finnekumla

On May 22, 2012, we traveled to Länghems and Finnekumla. Langhems was the birthplace of Charles John Hallquist and his father, Andreas Petterson Spetz. Finnekumla was the birthplace of Andreas’ father, Petter Mattiasson Sable. For Daryl, Petter would be his 3-great grandfather.

We first came into Länghems (57.6096, 13.2631) and as the church came into view we recognized it at once. Rhoda Hallquist’s parents made a trip to Sweden in the 1990’s and we had seen a picture of the church.
